Community & Public Education

Our connection with the people of Sussex County extends well beyond the moments when someone calls 911. We believe strong relationships between our paramedics and our community build trust, understanding, preparedness, and ultimately a safer Sussex County.

Whether we’re teaching lifesaving skills, visiting a school, participating in a community event, or simply giving someone an opportunity to meet the people behind Sussex County EMS, every interaction matters.

The better our community knows us, and the better we know our community, the better we can serve each other.

Special Events

Sussex County hosts hundreds of community gatherings, festivals, sporting events and other special events throughout the year.

Our role in special events goes beyond simply having paramedics nearby. SCEMS works with event organizers and our public safety partners to evaluate medical needs, plan appropriate resources and help ensure emergency medical care is available when needed.

Special events requiring County review are managed through an established application and planning process.

Stop the Bleed

Severe bleeding can become life-threatening within minutes. Stop the Bleed education gives members of the public the knowledge and confidence to take immediate action before professional help arrives.

Participants learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and use simple bleeding-control techniques, including direct pressure, wound packing and tourniquet application.

These are straightforward skills that can make an extraordinary difference during an emergency.

AAIR/ALERT Programs

Preparing for an active threat requires coordination long before an incident occurs.

Sussex County EMS participates in Active Attack Integrated Response (AAIR) and related ALERRT training to strengthen the coordinated response of EMS, fire and law enforcement personnel during active-threat incidents.

These programs focus on bringing public safety disciplines together, improving communication and coordination, and preparing responders to reach and care for injured patients in complex and rapidly changing environments.

For our community and public safety partners, the goal is preparedness: train together before we ever have to respond together.

Medic Assist Program

Great patient care starts with working well together.

The Sussex County EMS Medic Assist Program is designed specifically for our in-county fire and BLS partners to strengthen the teamwork that takes place every day between responding crews and SCEMS paramedics.

These educational sessions provide an opportunity to work directly with our paramedics while learning more about our ALS response model, equipment, current practices and system updates. Participants also receive hands-on instruction on how BLS providers and firefighters can effectively assist the paramedic crew during patient assessment, treatment, packaging and other aspects of an ALS response.

Medic Assist sessions are eligible for Delaware Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) continuing education hours and are designed to keep our partners informed, prepared and comfortable working alongside our crews.

The more we train together, the better we work together when a patient needs us most.

CPR Training

You don’t need a certification card to help save a life. Learn the basics, take action, and Take 10 for CPR.

Early CPR can make a lifesaving difference, and we want members of our community to feel comfortable taking action when cardiac arrest occurs.

At community events, Sussex County EMS offers Take 10 CPR, a quick, hands-on introduction to recognizing cardiac arrest, calling 911, performing effective chest compressions, and using an AED. In just a few minutes, participants can learn the basic skills needed to help until EMS arrives.

Looking for CPR Certification?

Sussex County EMS is an AHA training site and does have ACLS, PALS, BLS, and Heartsaver instructors. Sussex County EMS does not currently offer American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification courses to the public.

Individuals who need a formal CPR certification can reference our list of local organizations that provide certification courses.
