National Accreditations

Recognized for Excellence

At Sussex County EMS, excellence is not simply a goal—it is independently measured and verified. Our commitment to exceptional patient care, operational excellence, education, and continuous improvement has earned national accreditation from two of the most respected organizations in emergency medical services and healthcare simulation. These achievements place Sussex County EMS among an elite group of organizations dedicated to exceeding industry standards while continually advancing the profession.

Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS)

The Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) is recognized as the gold standard for ambulance service accreditation in the United States. Accreditation is awarded only to agencies that demonstrate excellence in patient care, clinical performance, leadership, safety, operations, and organizational management through a rigorous independent review process.

Today, fewer than 190 EMS agencies across the United States and Canada have earned CAAS accreditation out of the thousands of EMS agencies operating throughout North America. Sussex County EMS is proud to be one of only two Advanced Life Support agencies in Delaware to achieve this distinction, joining New Castle County EMS. This accreditation reflects our commitment to providing safe, accountable, and evidence-based emergency medical care while continuously pursuing excellence in every aspect of our organization.

Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH)

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) is the world’s leading organization dedicated to advancing healthcare education through simulation. SSH accreditation recognizes organizations that demonstrate excellence in simulation-based education, faculty development, curriculum design, learner assessment, and continuous program improvement.

In 2023, Sussex County EMS became the first EMS agency in the world to earn SSH Accreditation as an Accredited Center of Excellence for its simulation program. This distinction is traditionally held by some of the nation’s most respected academic medical centers, hospitals, and universities. In Delaware, accredited programs include ChristianaCare, Nemours Children’s Health, and Beebe Healthcare. Nationally, SSH-accredited programs include internationally recognized institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Yale School of Medicine, and many of the country’s leading healthcare organizations. Sussex County EMS is honored to stand alongside these institutions while remaining the first EMS agency worldwide to achieve this recognition.
