Department of Public Safety
A Message from the Director
Thank you for visiting the Sussex County Department of Public Safety website. Whether you are a resident, visitor, community partner, or someone seeking information about our services, we are pleased you are here.
Our commitment is to deliver exceptional public safety services that protect lives, preserve property, and enhance the well-being of our community. Every day, our dedicated staff work behind the scenes and on the front lines providing essential public safety services with integrity, compassion, and professionalism.
The Department of Public Safety is comprised of three integrated divisions working together to serve our community:
- Emergency Communications serves as the county’s public safety communications center, answering 911 calls, dispatching fire and EMS resources, and providing the critical link between those requesting help and the first responders who answer the call.
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS) delivers advanced life support and pre-hospital emergency medical care through highly trained paramedics equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
- Emergency Management prepares for, coordinates, and supports the county’s response to natural and human-caused disasters while helping our communities become more resilient through planning, training, public education, and recovery efforts.
Public safety is a shared responsibility, and our success depends on strong partnerships with our residents, visitors, volunteer emergency services, municipal agencies, healthcare organizations, schools, businesses, and our local, state, and federal partners. Together, we strive to build a safer, stronger, and more resilient Sussex County.
As you explore our website, I hope you gain a better understanding of the services we provide and the extraordinary professionals who make them possible. Their commitment to excellence, teamwork, and service is evident every day.
It is my privilege to lead this outstanding team as we work every day to serve the people of Sussex County.
Robert “Robbie” Murray Jr.
