Our Fleet
Built for Response. Designed for Sussex County.
Sussex County EMS operates a diverse fleet of response, command, support, and special operations vehicles designed to meet the needs of a large and growing county. From daily advanced life support response to large-scale emergencies and special events, each vehicle plays a specific role in keeping our personnel equipped, mobile, and ready to respond.
Decades of Service: Our Fleet Through the Years
Chevrolet Suburbans
Since 2014, Chevrolet Suburbans have served as the primary frontline response vehicle for Sussex County EMS paramedics. Their combination of passenger space, four-wheel-drive capability, and interior cargo capacity provided a dependable platform for carrying the extensive medical and operational equipment required for Advanced Life Support response.
Over more than a decade, multiple generations of Suburbans have been placed into service and adapted as technology, equipment, and the needs of our EMS system evolved. These vehicles have become a familiar sight throughout Sussex County and remain an important part of our fleet as we begin the transition to our next generation of Chevrolet 2500 response trucks.
Chevrolet 2500 Pickup’s
Beginning in 2026, Sussex County EMS began transitioning from the Chevrolet Suburban to a new generation of Chevrolet 2500 paramedic response trucks equipped with Iconic Caps. The new design provides significantly more organized storage space for the medical, rescue, and operational equipment carried by our paramedics while maintaining a capable frontline response platform. One of the greatest advantages is the removable and reusable Iconic Cap.
If a truck reaches the end of its service life or is damaged in a collision, the cap and its equipment can be transferred to a replacement chassis, allowing the unit to return to service in approximately one-quarter of the time required to purchase and fully outfit a traditional replacement vehicle. This modular approach improves fleet readiness while giving our paramedics the space and functionality needed for modern ALS response.
Administration
Sussex County EMS administrators utilize Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles to support field response, supervision, and command functions throughout the county. EMS maintains an Administrator on Call (AOC) to provide 24-hour administrative and operational support for significant incidents, system needs, and other situations requiring additional leadership in the field.
Our EMS administrators remain active field paramedics, allowing them to respond when needed and provide both operational leadership and advanced clinical support. These vehicles ensure our leadership team remains mobile, equipped, and available to support paramedics and partner agencies across Sussex County.
DECON 2
The HazMat Decontamination Unit and support trailer provide specialized equipment for hazardous materials incidents and technical rescue operations. The unit carries resources needed to establish and support decontamination operations, including protective equipment for personnel working in hazardous environments. It also carries air-monitoring and detection equipment used to evaluate potentially dangerous atmospheres and support technical rescue operations.
Together, the truck and trailer provide a mobile cache of specialized equipment that can be brought directly to complex incidents throughout Sussex County.
ATV Units
Sussex County EMS operates 3 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs/UTVs) to provide medical response in locations where traditional vehicles may have limited or no access. These units are deployed during mass gatherings, large special events, and outdoor operations, allowing paramedics to move through dense crowds, trails, fields, and other off-road environments.
They regularly support events such as marathons, July 4th celebrations, Apple Scrapple, and other community gatherings throughout Sussex County. Equipped to carry personnel and medical equipment, these vehicles help bring advanced medical care closer to the patient when access and mobility are challenging.
Med Surge
The Medical Surge Unit is a specialized support vehicle designed to bring additional medical and operational resources directly to large-scale incidents and planned events. Unlike the Mass Care Unit, it is not designed for patient treatment inside the vehicle. Instead, it carries additional medical supplies, MCI equipment, and other resources needed to rapidly expand on-scene capabilities.
The unit supports mass-casualty incidents, hazardous materials responses, large-scale standbys, special events, and other complex emergencies, providing crews with the equipment necessary to establish and sustain expanded medical operations.
Mass Care Unit
The Mass Care Unit (MCU-1) is a specialized Sussex County EMS resource designed to support mass-gathering events, mass-casualty incidents (MCIs), planned standbys, and other large-scale operations. The climate-controlled vehicle provides dedicated patient treatment areas, allowing medical personnel to evaluate, treat, and monitor patients in a protected environment away from weather and event conditions.
MCU-1 can support operations throughout Sussex County and is also available for statewide deployment, providing additional medical capability for major events, emergencies, and planned gatherings across Delaware.
