Sussex County EMS Simulation Program
Preparing Providers Before Patients
Exceptional patient care begins long before an emergency call. The Sussex County EMS Simulation Program provides realistic, hands-on training that allows our clinicians to develop critical thinking, refine technical skills, and practice high-risk, low-frequency emergencies in a safe learning environment. Every simulation is designed to improve clinical performance, strengthen teamwork, and ensure our providers are prepared to deliver exceptional care when it matters most.
Every simulation follows a structured educational process that begins with a pre-brief, where learners are introduced to the objectives, environment, and expectations while establishing psychological safety. Participants then engage in a realistic patient scenario before completing a facilitated debrief, where reflection, discussion, and feedback transform the experience into lasting learning. This structured approach allows providers to safely practice, make mistakes, and continually improve before caring for actual patients.
The Sussex County EMS Simulation Program extends far beyond paramedic education. The division regularly partners with local fire departments, Basic Life Support agencies, hospitals, emergency communications, law enforcement, emergency management, and regional healthcare organizations to conduct multidisciplinary training exercises. These collaborative simulations strengthen interoperability, improve communication, and enhance coordinated responses before emergencies occur so our partners are better prepared to work together when lives are on the line.
History of the Simulation Program
Simulation has been a cornerstone of education within Sussex County EMS for more than two decades. What began as a small initiative in 2008 to enhance continuing education has grown into one of the nation’s premier EMS simulation programs. Today, simulation supports new employee orientation, continuing education, specialty team training, competency validation, and clinical program implementation. This long-standing commitment to innovation led to Sussex County EMS becoming the first EMS agency in the world to earn accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
An Accredited Simulation Center
In 2023, Sussex County EMS became the first EMS agency in the world to earn accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) for excellence in simulation-based education. This internationally recognized accreditation validates that our educational programs meet the highest standards for faculty development, curriculum design, learner assessment, and continuous improvement. It ensures our providers receive education that is evidence-based, measurable, and focused on improving patient care.
Innovation Through Simulation
Our simulation program is more than a training center—it’s a proving ground for innovation. Before new equipment, operational procedures, quality initiatives, promotional processes, or clinical programs are introduced department-wide, they are often evaluated through realistic simulation. This allows Sussex County EMS to identify challenges, gather provider feedback, refine workflows, and improve implementation before changes reach the field.
By testing ideas in a controlled environment, the department can make informed decisions that improve patient care, provider safety, operational efficiency, and overall organizational success. This commitment to innovation ensures Sussex County EMS continues to lead the profession while providing the highest level of service to our community.
Our Simulation Center
Located within the Sussex County Public Safety Complex in Georgetown, our dedicated simulation center was purpose-built to replicate the challenges providers encounter in the field. The facility includes realistic patient care environments, multiple simulation rooms, advanced audiovisual recording capabilities, structured debriefing spaces, and a growing inventory of high-fidelity adult, pediatric, infant, and obstetric simulators. This immersive environment allows learners to practice under realistic conditions before encountering these situations with actual patients.
Behind every simulation is a dedicated team of simulation professionals. From faculty facilitators and debriefers to simulation technicians, role players, and operational support staff, each member plays an important role in designing realistic scenarios, operating simulation technology, evaluating learner performance, and creating meaningful educational experiences. Their collaboration ensures every training event is engaging, consistent, and focused on improving patient care.
